American History chair for state competition. American History essay contest chapter winner certificates and bronze medals may be presented by the chapter if desired. In addition, chapters may present certificates of participation to every student who participates in the essay contest. These supplies are available from The DAR Store.
Christopher Columbus Essay Contest DAR partnered with the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) in 1996 to sponsor an annual national essay contest in honor of Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to students in grades nine through twelve.
American History Essay Contest We conduct the American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 in all local schools and sanctioned home-study programs. Each year a selected topic for use during the forthcoming academic year is announced.

The American History Essay Contest was established to encourage young people to think creatively about our nation's great history and to learn about history in a new light. Lady Knox Chapter NSDAR supports education by providing The DAR Good Citizens Award and Essay Contest, The DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest, and the DAR American History Essay Contest at area schools. Many of our members donate time as tutors or volunteers in local schools.
Until recent years the chapter sponsored the American History Essay contest, rewarding the winners with a United States Savings Bond or a cash award. The DAR Good Citizens Award has been awarded to high school seniors from approximately 10 high schools in the area.
